PFAS “Forever Chemicals”
PFAS compounds are persistent chemicals that don't break down in the environment or the body. Here's the situation in Rochester.
PFAS in Rochester
The Monroe County Water Authority performs quarterly PFAS testing on source water, treated water, and distribution entry points. Currently, all Rochester water tests below the 2024 EPA regulatory limits (4 ppt for PFOA/PFOS, 10 ppt for PFNA/PFHxS/GenX).
However, PFAS are a growing concern. Lake Ontario receives water from numerous tributaries, and these persistent chemicals accumulate over time. Many health-conscious families are choosing proactive removal.
Removal Effectiveness
| Technology | PFAS Removal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse Osmosis | 94 – 99% | Most reliable for all PFAS types |
| Ion Exchange Resins | Up to 100% | Depends on resin type and flow rate |
| Granular Activated Carbon | ~73% average | Better for long-chain PFAS; less effective for short-chain |
| Pitcher/Countertop Carbon | Inconsistent | Not recommended as sole protection |
